PEMRAP® II: Returning RA Responsibilities

When working partner shifts with new students, please be aware of the following responsibilities for returning PEMRAP RAs:

  • Be ON TIME 
  • Set a good example 
  • Give a detailed tour of the Pediatric Emergency Department:
    • Triage 
    • PED X-Ray 
    • Waiting Room 
    • Restrooms 
    • Lounge/Break room 
    • Physician work area and where the Attending sits 
    • Nurse Stations 
    • Cafeteria 
  • Show new students: o where the PEMRAP Shift Logs are kept and how to clock in and out 
    • patient charts, and briefly explain where to find important information. 
    • where study packets are kept 
    • the locked cabinet, and where the key is kept 
    • the Tracking Board and how to screen for potential patients 
    • the ‘complaint’ sheet Show new students 
    • how to make phone calls/page someone 
  • Invite the new students to join you while you screen patients/and or obtain consent
    • When going into patient rooms, bring only one student to avoid overwhelming the family 
  • Orient to “Players” in the ED o Attending/Fellows 
    • Charge Nurse 
    • Residents (ped/EM/surg specialists) 
    • Medical students 
    • Staff Nurse/PNP’s 
    • EMT’s 
    • Registration 
    • Child Life 

Be kind and courteous, make sure the new student understands all that you’ve covered, and ask if they have questions.
